IIDRC arbitration training on "Foundation and Principles of Arbitration" is scheduled for 8th August 2026, aimed at law students and young lawyers looking to move past the textbook version of arbitration and into the working version of it.
The IIDRC Edge Foundation Arbitration Program is a one-day, practice-oriented training built around a gap most law schools leave open: students graduate having read about arbitration but rarely having drafted anything connected to it. This session is structured to close that gap directly. It retains the full conceptual and procedural depth of the original one-day IIDRC Foundation Program, while sharpening the format around a single focused drafting exercise on arbitration clauses and standalone arbitration agreements, widely regarded as the most immediately useful skill for anyone entering the field.
The training runs across six teaching hours, split into five sessions and delivered by three IIDRC tutors, Fahim A Khan, Neha Saifi, and Aashish Gupta, with a lunch break and two short breaks built into the day. It is conducted entirely online, which means location is not a barrier to attending.
The design follows three principles. Conceptual clarity comes first: participants should leave with a clear working map of what arbitration is, how it functions within the Indian legal system, and where a young lawyer fits into that system. One skill, done properly, comes second: rather than a shallow sweep across several skills, the day builds toward a single concrete output, a properly drafted arbitration clause and agreement. Career orientation comes third: sessions are framed around what young lawyers actually encounter in practice, not abstract doctrine removed from how arbitration functions commercially.
By the end of the day, participants gain a structured understanding of arbitration as both a legal and commercial dispute resolution mechanism, working knowledge of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 sufficient to navigate real matters at entry level, and a functional ability to draft and review arbitration clauses and standalone arbitration agreements. They also come away with a working sense of how arbitration proceedings move from commencement to award, along with direct career guidance from practising arbitration lawyers.
The curriculum spans five sessions: an introduction to arbitration, the Indian arbitration framework, drafting the arbitration clause and agreement, arbitration in practice, and a closing session on careers in arbitration with an open question and answer round.
Participants who attend the full program and submit the drafting task receive the IIDRC Certificate in Foundational Arbitration Practice, and certified participants become eligible for Fellow Associate at IIDRC, a genuine institutional pathway rather than a certificate that sits unused.
